CSR Social Research Digest – March 2013

Summary

This survey report aims to uncover what types of organizations conduct sustainability-related work, what the educational and professional backgrounds of individuals who work in sustainability-related activities, and what are the important skills for a successful professional working on sustainability-related activity.  The sustainability survey report is conducted in collaboration with the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP), receiving input from more than 700 professionals working in the field.

Key findings

  • The survey reveals that the most common educational backgrounds of sustainability professionals don’t match the skills considered most successful in the field and nearly more than 80 percent of sustainability workers pursue more training.
  • Sustainability professionals have extensive backgrounds from several disciplines.
  • 77 percent are from health and safety; 67 percent from quality control, 66 percent from risk management and 62 percent from compliance jobs.
  • 69 percent of respondents have less than 10 years experience in the sustainability profession.
  • Communication was named as the most important skill in the profession.
  • Other high-ranking skills influencing change management, technology and expertise, problem solving and financial analysis.

Building on BSR’s review of wireless and the environment, this follow-up report explores the opportunities and challenges for society from the use of wireless (licensed spectrum) technology. The report has a particular focus on the areas of health care, finance, education, and community empowerment.

Key Findings

  • Wireless products and services are a powerful agent of social change that provide billions of people around the world with anytime, anywhere access.
  • Around the world, there are billions of “underbanked” or “unbanked” people, but thanks to wireless technology, they have access to market information and banking services so they receive a fair price for their goods and services and protect their money.
  • From remote monitoring to disease management, wireless technology is helping improve healthcare outcomes and address the healthcare worker shortage.
  • In the United States, chronic disease treatment costs more than US$1.4 trillion each year, but using mHealth could mean a savings of more than US$21.1 billion per year.
  • By using mobile technology, interactive learning may happen at any time and virtually anywhere.
  • Technology-based instruction can reduce the time it takes students to reach learning objectives by 30 to 80 percent.
  • Wireless technology empowers citizens around the world to create and interact with their communities and the world, hold their political leaders accountable, and organize for social, political, and economic change.
  • The report also highlights the role that licensed spectrum availability and the world’s 6 billion mobile connections have played in encouraging innovators to develop a range of applications.
